The poetic machine of the couple parades a series of photos, postcards, toys, miniatures, shadow puppets and music past our eyes, that erupt in whispers at dusk with a touch of fever at the temples. Their theatre is a necklace of intimate and delicate moments that bloom in small spaces”.
Marcos Ordóñez, El País

La melancolía del turista (The melancholy of the tourist) is a breakdown of the moments and images that build the idea of a paradise in one’s imagination. It is the result of fieldwork in certain tourist spots to recover remains that speak of the ascent and fall of this mental fantasy. How many seconds does it take to build and lose a paradise?

The melancholy of the tourist is a gallery of illusions that lies beneath the intensity of a transformed landscape that no longer exists or never really did, of a body that dissolves in time and is only revived in the vestiges of memory. This is why it questions the life of the images that are created by our idea of leisure. But melancholy is also a state of suspended emotion that accompanies exception, an active force that leads us to the desire for reinvention and to reinvent ourselves in these instants when the inertia of things is fractured.

Here is an intimate journey for 42 viewers. A small stage scaled to the objects that appear and disappear in the blink of an eye: lights and shadows, analog images, delicate mechanisms, paper and tin miniatures. A small and delicate “theatre-cinema”, a game of dreams, whose poetic inventions will take you back to the moment when our toys were alive...

Shaday Larios of the Mexican company Microscopía and Jomi Oligor of Hermanos Oligor make their first appearance at the Autumn Festival with The melancholy of the tourist. Without losing the individual poetic touch that is unique to both creators, this piece proposes a critical look at the imagination regarding paradise. Oligor and Microscopía -two landmark documentary theatre companies- explore this fantasy with their characteristic language composed of objects, mechanisms and miniatures.

In the words of Shaday Larios: “We believe the inanimate has a soul, and we draw connections with invisible subjects and objects that we endow with movement and meaning. Our proposal takes us to this zone that the years and maturity gradually repress until it vanishes”.
